Marjorie Jarvis
Sadly we have to announce the sudden and unexpected death of Marjorie Jarvis.
Marjorie, with her husband Tony, had bred and reared Angora goats in the UK under the Engedi name for 26 years, breeding many male and female Supreme Champions during that time. She had maintained and improved her lines by means of a number of importations of stock from Canada, from the La Piniere herd of Alain and Francine Sauve. She was for most of that time a stalwart attendee of all the major Angora goat Shows in the country.
When President of BAGS she set herself the task of visiting all the affiliated branches during her first year in the post. She remained a member of the BAGS Committee after serving as President for several years and was most active as Chairwoman of the Judge’s Sub Committee. She was a well respected Judge in the UK and Europe. Marjorie encouraged new angora goat owners and set up the South West Angora Goat Group (SWAGG), as well as running goat husbandry courses for those interested.
In recent years Marjorie became more involved in running her mohair shop in Sidmouth, but remained a keen member of the Society.
Her presence and advice will be much missed.

IMPORTANT NEWS RE WORMING.
A new class of wormimg drug has been released this month for use in sheep, but we are told it is also fine to use in goats but at one and a half times sheep dose rate.
The drug is ZOLVIX. This is very good news and is the first new type of wormer for 25 years. We must advise careful use and not over zealous and frequent usage which could of course hasten resistance which is of course not yet present for this drug.

Fortunately this year has so far seen no invasion of bluetongue infection although a little time time still exists for midges to reach us from the continent. With both Bluetongue 1 and 8 still presnet in France this autumn we will still have to be on our guard next year. Vaccination of susceptible stock is still likely to be recommended next year but we will update as spring approaches.

2008
Cancellation of Breed Show
The Society Show at Malvern due to be held on 13th - 16th June has been cancelled due to the continuing prevailing Bluetongue restrictions. All booked exhibitors are now in Protection Zones and the Showground is not. Therefore, regrettably no goats could be brought to the Show for showing. We hope to arrange a limited display of non show goats and mohair products will be present.
Other shows have been severely curtailed by the regulations with Stafford, Newark and Notts and the Royal Norfolk being amongst those with no Angora goats this year. Hopefully the Royal Show and the Royal Welsh Show will have Angora goats in show classes.
Bluetongue restrictions have now been a problem for nearly nine months, but the rolling Protection Zone programme and vaccination should lead to easier times. On the subject of vaccination, please note that goats require two vaccinations 3-4 weeks apart and probably require 6 monthly boosters. The vaccine is not fully tested on goats but is believed to be both safe and effective by the manufacturers. We still await further advice regarding its use in early and late pregnancy before deciding whether to vaccinate in spring and Autumn.
The Devon Show was won by Richard and Mary Yonge (Puslinch Angoras) and the Welsh Smallholder Show was won by Graham and Sylvia Sexton (Blueberry Angoras).
More show details will appear later.
At the AGM Julie Edwards was elected as a new member of the general Committee and all Officers were re-elected with Graham Sexton remaining as Chairman, Jenny Blackmore, Vice Chairman and Chris Tyler as Treasurer.
Steve Whitley and Ian Mason have been added to the Judges List as Intermediate Judges.
There will be details of a Johnes disease control scheme sent out to members and posted on this site shortly."

Welsh Goat of the Year 2007
Chrido Royale (owned by Dot and Chris Tyler)
BRITISH ANGORA GOAT SOCIETY BREED SHOW AT MALVERN
It was an extremely well attended event in terms of exhibitor and goat numbers with an almost overfull ring in the adult doe and kid class.
The judging of Petrus de Wett was a useful outside eye on our breed. His discussion, both after the classes and his talks, both at the Show and later in Devon
gave us all food for thought as to how we should be looking to improve our breed. The value of a foreign judge, particularly one from areas where Angora goats have been kept for over 100 years cannot be underestimated.
BMM FLEECE COLLECTION 2007
The 2007 fleece collection was graded and sorted on 14th/15th September at a new venue at Jo Beswick's premises at Longdon, nr Tewkesbury.

Blue Tongue
The general feeling is now that it is only a matter of time before this disease reaches the UK – most probably the South-East area first. Goats will probably display little signs of the disease. We will be required to treat our animals with insectisides – but clear rules are not yet made.

2005
BREED
SHOW
The annual Breed Show held this year at the Three Counties
Showground at Malvern, was extremely well attended with 80 goat entries
and 100 fleece entries. Several exhibitors were present who had not previously
attended the Breed Society Show.
The
Show Champion was CRIDO ROYALE owned and bred by Mr and
Mrs C Tyler. The Reserve Show Champion was GILSTONE JULIA owned by Mr and Mrs I Mason and bred by Mrs S Gill. The Breed Show will
be held next year at the Three Counties Showground during the Three Counties
Show.
ROYAL SHOW
Royal Show
Champion was CORRYMOOR WASHINGTON owned and bred by Mr
and Mrs S Whitley. Reserve Show Champion was LONGHOPE TRUDIE owned
and bred by Mrs J King.
ROYAL WELSH SHOW
Royal Welsh
Show Champion was CRIDO TSAR owned and bred by Mr and
Mrs C Tyler. Reserve Show Champion was ELAN MORPOSH owned
and bred by Mr and Mrs TM Rogers
WELSH GOAT OF THE YEAR was CRIDO TSAR owned and bred by Mr and Mrs C Tyler. Reserve Welsh Goat of the Year was CRIDO ROYALE owned and bred by Mr and Mrs C Tyler.
2005 MOHAIR SALE PRICES
Kid fleece £6.00 per kilo
Young goat fleece £3.40 per kilo
Adult goat fleece £2.20 per kilo
With
the reduction in the mohair production from the USA and South Africa there
is a relative deficit in mohair in the world and the future for mohair
prices looks very favourable. The changes in subsidy payments now mean
that the Single Payment Scheme moneys can be offered for land used for
goat husbandry. This is the first time any financial assistance has been
available for goats in this country. This is a further boost for angora
goat ownership.
EAR TAGGING
Electronic
tagging has now been cancelled in regard to goats due to the small number
of goats in the UK. The new ear tag numbering regime, which means we will
obtain tags and numbers identical to the cattle system, will operate from
next year. The tag manufacturers will issue numbers to us in accordance
with DEFRA instructions, not in according to the number sequence that
we require. We can use our own individual identifying numbers of separate
tags if we wish.
SKINS
There will
be new forms and regulations with regard to skins, their collection from
abattoirs, salting and onward transit to tanneries after the end of September
2005. In essence this will mean that owners of goats slaughtered can take
skins back to their own premises, salt and preserve them there and then
arrange to transport them to the tanneries. The principle rules mean that
transit must be in leak proof containers/packages and that skins must
be kept separate from livestock and in vermin proof areas. There will
be forms that must be completed with copies for the farm, haulier and
tanneries.
